A video of employees of a rural Chinese bank being spanked with a stick-like object has gone viral and sparked outrage on the internet. The footage was taken during a training session and shows the trainer hitting eight workers in turn.
The whacks appear to be quite light, and the atmosphere seems jocular. Is it abuse or not?
The Punisher
Many parents believe that spanking their children is an effective way to discipline them. However, it can also lead to child abuse or even death. In 2018, a 6-year old boy from Shaanxi passed away due to brain damage that was caused by his mother’s beatings. China has now stepped up efforts to enforce laws that ban the corporal punishment of children.
The Marvel character is violent vigilante that has appeared in numerous comics, movies and television shows. The Punisher was the first live-action version, starring Dolph Lundgren. Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson appeared in subsequent films. Jon Bernthal is set to reprise the role in a new TV series for Netflix.
In the early 2000s, a 12-issue miniseries by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, again titled The Punisher (April 2000 – March 2001) and an ongoing series that same year under Marvel’s MAX imprint, revived the character’s popularity. Both series returned the title character to his lone vigilante roots, and portrayed him with a more gritty, realistic style than had been seen before.
The ongoing series continued exploring Castle’s psyche, history and his third tour in Vietnam. The miniseries Born and the one-shot Punisher Born by John Severin & Darick Robertson explored Castle’s origins. They showed that he was a man who had lived with grief and had grown up in a world of murders.
The Spanking
Spanking is typically performed with a hand or a piece of cloth (often called a spanking belt) on the child’s back. In China, a video has emerged of eight employees from a rural bank being publicly spanked for poor performance during a training session. The cellphone video shows the manager wielding what appears to be a stick and spanking each of the employees four times on stage. The video was posted by the Changzhi Local Government on the microblogging site Weibo. It has caused outrage among Chinese internet users. Managers at the Shanxi Rural Credit Cooperatives Union reportedly are investigating the incident.
With the advent of the Internet individuals of all pre-existing interests and/or knowledge now have more access than ever to content relating to erotic spanking. There are many pornographic websites, mainly American or British-based, that produce spanking videos. There are also numerous blogs that discuss the topic.
The Reaction
A video of staff from a Chinese bank being spanked by a trainer for poor performance has gone viral on China’s version of Twitter (Sina Weibo). The video shows eight employees of a Chinese bank, both men and women, lining up on a platform in front other trainees. A trainer then rebukes the staff for not meeting expectations before hitting them with what appears to be a paddle.
Several rounds of spankings are carried out, as the trainees try to keep their eyes open and look straight ahead. The pain is so intense that one woman seems to faint while others clench the buttocks. The trainer continues to hit and yell at them. Other employees in the audience are stunned by the situation.
In a regression analysis, neither parent status nor religious affiliation predicted coworker attitudes toward spanking. At both medical centers, however, the type of position was more important: staff who worked directly with patient perceived their coworkers as being less supportive of spanking. .001).
